NotesGirouard was born in Quebec city in 1794. He began his professional life as a notary in 1816, after serving as a volunteer in the War of 1812. By the 1830s, he was an elected official in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada and was aligned with Louis-Joseph Papineau and the Patriote movement, which sought to reclaim Quebec from what they saw as a British domination over Lower Canada. The movement was inspired by the ideas of classical liberalism and the American Revolution. He was re-elected to the assembly in 1834, which led to his active participation in the Lower Canada Rebellion of 1837-38. The extent of his participation was well chronicled in the news. For example, in an 1838 news article from the Chronicle and Gazette, Girouard is listed as one of twenty-two people who were arrested in connection with a murder of two Loyalist farmers. The murder happened in the town of Laprairie, now an off-island suburb of Montreal. The article dates from November 7th, and the Rebellion of 1837-38 ended on November 10th. Upon his release within a year, he did not participate in any further political movements or uprisings. In the mid-1850s he established the Hospice Youville with his second wife in Montreal. He died in 1855.
