NotesH.R. MacMillan (1885 - 1976) founded the H.R. MacMillan Export Company in 1919 and is a key figure in Canadian corporate history. MacMillan studied at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph and at Yale University. Upon graduation MacMillan joined the forestry department of the Canadian government and in 1912 was hired as chief forester for British Columbia. MacMillan distinguished himself while working for the Federal government as a special trade commissioner wherein he explored the international market for Canadian lumber. This experience and the realization of the potential of the lumber industry inspired MacMillan to establish his own export lumber business. The firm grew from a small timber brokerage firm into several companies successful in logging, lumber, plywood and door manufacturing, railway tie production, and shipping. In 1951 MacMillan merged with Bloedel and in 1956 he retired. MacMillan left almost half of his estate to the H.R. MacMillan Forestry Building at the University of British Columbia.
