Notes | Robert Shank Atcheson was an influential English businessman, who together with Peter Buchanan (1805-1860), a Glasgow merchant involved in business in Upper Canada, committed the Great Western railway to a calculated scheme for raising funds on the London market. Thanks to the success of this scheme, through the sale of convertible bonds to British investors, the Great Western railway moved quickly ahead. The paste on verso of this bookplate has lifted colour from somewhere. The verso has a gold, red, green and black stain of sorts. This is notable because some of the colours can be seen through the thin paper from the recto side, and give the bookplate a unique appearance.
