Description | This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with long stemmed flowers and a softly invected saltier, vert (green). Three flower stems, layered below the saltier, rise from the earth at middle base. At the honour point appears an open blossom, and on either side of the fess point are closed blossoms. The shield is crested by a diadem decorated with feathers. The Latin motto appears on the saltier, written from dexter chief to sinister base. |

Notes | William Tufts Brigham, son of William Brigham was born May 24, 1841. He attended Boston Latin School and graduated from Harvard University in 1862 with the degree of Master of Arts. He studied Botany, and in 1864-65 explored the Hawaiian Islands with Horace Mann. He was a professor of Natural Science at Oahu College, resigning in Oct. 1865, to continue explorations in China and India. He returned to Mass., and in Sept. 1867 was admitted to the Bar. In 1868-69 he was an instructor in Botany at Harvard. He removed to Honolulu in 1888 to take charge of the museum of Polynesian Ethnology and Natural History, founded there by C.R. Bishop, now known as the Bishop Museum. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, of the California Academy of Sciences, and of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences.
