NotesThis bookplate likely belongs to Marie Caroline Ferdinande Louise Bourbon Two Sicilies, Duchesse de Berry (1798-1870), who was daughter of Francis I of the Two Sicilies and his first wife, Maria Clementina of Austria. She married Prince Charles Ferdinand of Artois, duc of Berry, the nephew of King Louis XVIII of France in 1816. She is considered an important figure of the Bourbon Restoration following the assassination of her husband in 1820. Her son was Henri, Comte de Chambord, who, having been born after the assassination of his father was called "miracle child" and continued the direct Bourbon line of King Louis XIV of France. After fleeing France in 1830 due to the July Revolution, and the removal of Charles X from power, she returned to her family in Naples. In 1832, she made a unsuccessfully attempt to restore the Bourbon dynasty during the reign of the Orléanist monarch, King Louis Philippe of the French (1830-1848), which resulted in her arrest and imprisonment in November of that year. She was released in June of 1833, following the discovery of her secret marriage to an Italian nobleman, with whom she birthed a son. For this reason, she was no longer feared by members of the House of Bourbon, and she left for Sicily. She died at Brunnsee in Austria, in April 1870.
