NotesAccording to a written description in Burke's, 'The General Armory of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales: Comprising a Registry of Armorial Bearings from the Earliest to the Present Time, ' this bookplate's heraldic design appears to be a combination of the coat of arms of the Lockwoods of county Stafford and the crest of the Lockwoods of counties Essex and Northampton. The motto displayed is used by both Wood and Lockwood families.
