| Notes | Little can be found on the Methodist Sunday School library, but the area that was known as Cote St. Antoine now comprises the downtown core of the city of Montreal. Lovell's directory remarks that the church was built of brick in 1888, and that in 1891 the reverend was Frederick Tripp. The congregation in 1891 numbered some 200, and the church itself was located on the Cote St Antoine Road. It is unclear which church the Cote St Antoine Methodist church actually was, although evidence suggests that it was the church that is today known as St James' United Church, as St James' was completed in 1889 and was located in the right area. The cornerstone was laid in 1887 by architect Alexander Dunlop, and the church itself was erected on the site of the former house of finance and transport magnate, Sir Hugh Allen. Over the years, the church played host to many meetings of a variety of groups, including the suffragettes in the early twentieth century. With the amalgamation of the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregationalist churches to form the United Church of Canada in 1925, St James' was renamed St James' United Church. The building is a listed historical building.
