Notes | Francis Edward Gilman, the son of Stephen M. Gilman, was born in Danville, Quebec on April 11, 1842. He studied at St. Francis College in Richmond and McGill University in Montreal. He was admitted to the Bar of Lower Canada on June 5, 1865 and received a doctorate in law in 1877. Gilman became a lawyer in May 1885 and practiced in Montreal, where he was associated with L.H. Boyd. He was the Director of the Mechanics Institute, the Montreal General Hospital, the Western Hospital, and Protestant Infant's Home. Between 1879 and 1882, Gilman served as the City Council Alderman of Saint-Antoine in Montreal, becoming President of the Police Committee in March 1881. On March 12, 1887, Gilman became a member of the Legislative Council of Quebec, as a representative of Wellington. He served as a member of the Liberal Party. On May 10, 1866, Gilman married Amelia Maria Weaver in Montreal in a Presbyterian church. He died in Westmount on May 24, 1917 and was buried in Montreal on May 26, 1917. For a photograph of F.E.
