Description | This bookplate consists of a combination of heraldic and pictorial elements. At the centre, is an ovular frame containing an image of a nude woman in a crouching position, and holding a flower pot in her open hands. From the pot, stands a single flower. Above the frame is a small escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a crane. The crest is a dexter helm, itself topped by a straight wreath, and a horseman's spur and strap, accompanied on either side by a pair of wings erect. Behind the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. |

Notes | The bookplate artist's mark is present at the base of the bookplate, within the date of creation. George Herbert Wailes (1862-) is the author of "Tintinnidae from the Strait of Georgia, B.C." (University of Toronto Press, 1925). He also appears to have contributed to a scientific work entitled "The British freshwater Rhizopoda and Heliozoa", printed by the Ray Society from 1905-21. The author of the work is noted as James Cash (1839-1909), and George Herbert Wailes is noted as a collaborating creator, along with John Hopkinson (1844-1919). The Ray Society was founded in 1844 and publishes research in the natural sciences, mainly relating to British natural history. A number of his works can be found through the UBC Library Catalogue.
