| Notes | Bookplate most likely belongs to Spencer Horatio Walpole (1806-1898), a British politician who served three terms as Home Secretary in 1852, 1858, and 1866. According to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, he was also a director for the Great Western Railway from 1853, and remained active in the company until 1863. Another possible owner is Walpole's eldest son, also Spencer Walpole (1839-1907), a historian and author of "History of England from the Conclusion of the Great War in 1815" and "A History of Twenty-Five Years, 1856'1880", two publications called "The Electorate and the Legislature" (1881) and "Foreign Relations" (1882), and various articles and essays. UBC Library has access to many of Walpole's writings in its holdings.
