Notes | Carl Dair was born in Welland, Ontario in 1912. Self-educated, Dair rose to prominence as a typographic designer, writer, and teacher. As a gift commemorating Canada's centennial in 1967, Dair created the Cartier font, Canada's first domestic typeface. Later that year, Dair died of a heart attack on a flight from New York to Toronto. He was survived by his wife Edith and his two daughters Willa and Erika. Although the creator of this bookplate is unknown, there is a small B in the right lower corner of the plate. References: 1) '1960 Recipients.' Society of Graphic Designers of Canada. n.d.
