In 1906 he married Kate Mary Green (1883-1963), with whom he had one child, Patricia Coburn (1909-2000). In 1910 he emigrated to Canada with his wife and daughter. Coburn made his way to Vancouver, where he became well-known as a barrister and solicitor. He was called to the bar in Vancouver in late 1912. He practiced in the city between 1910 and 1960 and passed ten years after his retirement in 1970. His daughter Patricia married in Arthur Edward Hinton in 1943, and after a stint in London, moved back to Vancouver where she stayed until her father's death in 1970.
