| Notes | La Bibliothèque des Avocats, or the Advocate's Library, was founded in 1828 as a bilingual library for lawyers, out of the desire for a library containing a 'variety of works on different parts of the law, ' 'many collections of legislation compared, ' and 'judicial decisions and legal journals.' It was incorporated on June 26, 1840, and in 1853 became La Bibliothèque du Barreau, or the Library of the Bar. Edward John Hemming inventoried and classified the documents of the library, finally publishing them in 1857 as a catalogue, together with those of the Library of the Bar of Lower Canada. The Library of the Bar is still in existence and may be accessed online at the website of the Barreau du Québec. An almost identical, English-language version of this bookplate is also available in the Philippe Masson Ex Libris Collection at McGill University. There are also additional bookplates of La Bibliothèque des Avocats in the Thomas Murray Collection (BP MUR CAN I L53738a ; BP MUR CAN I A386).
