NotesThe owner may have been Douglas Battersby, who was born in England around 1843, and appears in the 1851 census living in Lancashire. He left England by 1861 and moved to Canada by 1871. The 1871 Canadian census shows him living in Montreal, where he worked as an accountant and a passenger agent for the National Line steamship company. He remained in Montreal until at least 1891, after which he vanishes from the census. He married a Canadian woman of Irish descent named Mary (born around 1843), and they had one daughter, Isabel (born around 1866, and called Bell in the 1881 census). The family is listed as 'Buttersby' in the 1871 census, but the names and birth dates confirm their identity. This is presumably the Douglas Battersby acknowledged in the preface of James Croil's 1898 Steam Navigation and its Relation of the Commerce of Canada and the United States (xi).
