Notes | J.A. Carveth & Co., also known as J.A. Carveth & Co Limited, was a medical publisher and bookseller located in Toronto and operating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. According to its advertisements, J.A. Carveth & Co. carried the largest and most complete stock of the latest American and English publications in Canada, and imported foreign publications. Among the titles published and sold by J.A. Carveth & Co. were 'Post-mortem Examinations Methods and Technique, ' 'Equine Myology, ' and 'Practice of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery.' The 1898 Toronto City Directory lists J.A. Carveth & Co.'s address as 413 Parliament Street, as does the Calendar of the University of Toronto for the year 1891-2, but the bookseller's tickets indicate that the firm also had premises at 351 Parliament Street and 434 Younge Street. Although it is not known when J.A. Carveth & Co. ceased operations, by 1910, J. Alva Carveth, proprietor of the firm, was managing director J. F. Hartz Co. A copy of ex libris '2' is also available in the Philippe Masson Ex Libris Collection at McGill University. References: 1) Canadian Book, Stationery and Publishing Trades Association. (1910).
