NotesAlice Ravenhill (1859-1954) was born in England where she worked as Secretary of the Royal British Nurses' Association (1894-1897) and as a university lecturer on Home Economics at the University of London. Ravenhill immigrated to Canada in 1910 where she continued her work on social welfare issues ; for example, she established women's institutions in B.C. as well as the Society for the Furtherance of B.C. Indian Arts and Crafts in Victoria (later renamed the B.C. Indian Arts and Welfare Society). In 1948 she was honored with the degree of D.Sc. from the University of British Columbia and in 1950 she received an honorary degree of Doctor of Home Economics from the American Association of Home Economics. Her publications include: The Native Tribes of British Columbia (Victoria: Charles Banfield, 1938) ; A Corner Stone of Canadian Culture: An Outline of the Arts and Crafts of the Indian Tribes of British Columbia (Victoria: B.C. Provincial Museum, 1944) ; Folklore of the Far West, With Some Clues to Characteristics and Customs (Victoria: Indian Arts & Welfare Society, 1953).
