NotesDr. Hugh Sinclair was a physiologist at Magdalen College, Oxford. In 1965-66, he sold his collection of 7, 000 rare medical and scientific books to UBC Library for $270, 000. UBC Library was able to acquire the collection through the generosity of H. R. MacMillan. Dr. Sinclair sold the collection to UBC because "he wanted his collection to be used by serious students, not hoarded by collectors" (UBYSSEY, 24 March 1966: 16), but he had to sell it in order to "escape insolvency" (Rev. Oxford Dictionary of National Biography 2004). As a nutritionist, Dr. Sinclair is best known for his belief that a diet lacking in essential fatty acids causes degenerative diseases.
