Notes | The Smithsonian Institution Libraries have the bookplate of John Watts de Peyster (9 March 1821 - 4 May 1907), an author, philanthropist, and Adjutant General of the New York National Guard with the same Latin motto as this bookplate. No description of the coat-of-arms was found, so it is unclear whether this bookplate belonged to de Peyster. The Franklin and Marshall College Archives, however, have an image of de Peyster's bookplate on their web site. It is more decorative than this simple heraldic one, but the crest and coat-of-arms are the same. Another possible owner could be John Watts, President of the Council of New York in North America when that country was still under British rule, and the coat-of-arms associated with him matches the one on the bookplate.
