NotesThe bookplate was created by Clare Victor 'Dwig' Dwiggins (1874-1958) a prolific American cartoonist. He produced comics such as Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn (1918), School Days (1910s-1932) and Nipper (1931-1937). He lived in New York and New Jersey until the 1940s when he moved with his family to California to work for Disney studios. He reportedly often used his wife, Betsy, as a model, perhaps an inspiration for this bookplate. The bookplate owner was likely Marguerite Howard Powter, born June 25th, 1893 in Ontario, Canada. Her parents were Arthur Edwin Powter and Helen Seaton Cockburn. She died in 1968 in Verdun, Québec. Mention of a Marguerite Powter is made in the 1912-1913 academic directory for the Montreal campus of the Université Laval, now known as Université de Montréal. She is listed as an admitted student in the Arts Program.
