Notes | The owner and creator of this bookplate are both uncertain. It is possible that the bookplate belonged to Robert Smart of Montréal born 1825, given the bookplate's inclusion in a collection from Montréal. This Robert Smart married Mary Smart and had three sons, George Elliot Smart (born in England on 13 August 1860, died 23 October 1937 in Lachine Québec), Peter Smart (born in 1865), and William Smart (born 1867). The University of McGill's Phillipe Masson Ex Libris collection contains two bookplates owned by William Lynn Smart, C.W. and William Lynn Smart, Jur. C.W. which both feature the same image of a bird with spread wings, holding a thistle. It is possible that these owners were the son and grandson of the Robert Smart mentioned above and that this image of a bird is particular to this family. |
