NotesBookplate artist most likely James Ross (1745-1821), who was a student of R. Hancock at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works, a porcelain company still in production. Bookplate owner is John Somers (1788-1852), Earl Somers, Lord Viscount Eastnor of Eastnor Castle, Herefordshire, Baron of Evesham, Worcester, who rose to his title after his father's death in 1806. According to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, the first baron Somers, also John Somers (1651-1716), was a well known lawyer and politician ; notably he helped write royal speeches and aided in the establishment of what is now known as the Bill of Rights.
