| Description | Black ink on white paper. Above the escutcheon on a straight wreath, sits a dexter hand, erased, holding a cross crosslet. Below the wreath a vizored helm with mantling appears. The escutcheon is divided per quarter. The quarterly field near dexter chief is argent (silver) with a lion rampant and near sinister chief, or (gold), is a dexter hand, erased, holding a cross crosslet, gules. The quarterly field near the sinister base displays a fish naiant on water, vert (green) and a lymphad in the dexter base, argent. Below the escutcheon is a banner displaying the originator's Latin motto. |

| Notes | Hugh John Macdonald (1850-1929) was the only surviving son of John A. Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada. Born in Kingston, Upper Canada (now Ontario), he was educated at Queen's College School and the University of Toronto. After the death of his mother in 1857, Macdonald was raised by his aunt Margaret and her husband James Williamson, a Presbyterian minister. Macdonald practiced law and began a sporadic political career in 1891as a member of the Conservative party. Macdonald was knighted in 1913. Although he tried to separate himself from his father's legacy, Macdonald's political career was not of long-lasting significance to Canada and he is remembered primarily because of his family association. The Murray collection also includes a nearly identical bookplate belonging to Macdonald's father, John A. Macdonald. See, BP MUR CAN P M333.
