Notes | It is unclear which James Bruce MacKinnon owned this bookplate. The MacKinnon clan crest always features a boar's head with a deer bone in the mouth, which originates from an event that allegedly happened in the 14th century when a member of the clan was separated from his hunting party in Scotland. Setting up camp in a cave, he began cooking a deer over an open fire when he was suddenly charged by a boar. The individual jammed the deer bone into the boar's mouth, prying it open, afterwards killing the animal with a knife. References: 1) MacKinnon, Charles. Scottish Highlanders (1992).
