DescriptionBrown ink on cream paper. A man is seated in a wing chair by the fire, wearing slippers and reading a book ; his face is not visible but his pipe pokes out from behind the chair. A fire is roaring in a brick fireplace behind him, with a bust labeled 'Kipling' on the mantelpiece ; the mantel is inscribed with the words 'Be a reader but not a book keeper' with initials below the quote that appear to read A.G.A. In the foreground, there are piles of books and manuscripts and a small dog.

NotesNorman Friedman (1900 - 1981) was a successful businessman and book collector in Montreal. A student of Stephen Leacock's at McGill, Friedman received his bachelor's degree in commerce in 1921. Friedman's enormous book collection was donated to McGill University in 1946. It included a Rudyard Kipling collection, as well as, collections of the works of Stephen Leacock, Christopher Morley, Robert Louis Stevenson, and various ephemera from the Boy Scout organization, of which Friedman was an active leader. A.G. (Arthur) Racey (1870 - December 21, 1941) was a noted Montreal cartoonist and illustrator who contributed editorial cartoons to the Montreal Star newspaper from 1899 ' 1941. Many of his works were reproduced worldwide. In addition, many of his watercolour and oil paintings are held in private collections across Canada.
