NotesFormally, the creator and/or owner of this bookplate are unknown. There are, however, two possible owners: Laurent-Joseph Bertrand (also known as Joseph-Laurent) and Louis Bertrand Castel. Laurent-Joseph Bertrand (1741-1813) was born in Montreal and entered religious studies after the death of wife shortly after their marriage in 1762. He was ordained in 1776, and was a parish priest in two different parishes which had divisive conflicts on the matter of building new churches. He died in his second parish, Rivière-du-Loup. Louis Bertrand Castel (1688-1757) was a French mathematician born in Montpellier. He entered the order of the Jesuits in 1703. He was most famous in his day for his scientific work 'Optique des couleurs' (1740), which was a treatise on the melody of colors. This idea was embodied in the Ocular Harpsichord, which opened a small stained glass window whenever a key was struck ' one window per key. The border, with its musical instruments and small triangle, resembling a prism, particularly supports the possibility that this bookplate belonged to Castel.
