DescriptionBlack and blue ink on cream paper. The rectangular border consists of three black lines of decreasing thickness towards the center. In the top right corner is a small butterfly with outspread wings with some decoration. Below the butterfly is text in stylized, capitalized, black serif font. The bookplate owner's name is printed below in slightly different stylized font in a larger size. Underneath the owner's name is a larger butterfly with more elaborate outstretched wings. The text forms a single column in the left-hand side of the bookplate. To the right of the text is a bookshelf that appears to extend down to the bottom of the bookplate. Books are stacked in various ways on the shelf, spines facing out. In front of the bookshelf is a cello. The base of the cello sits in the bottom center of the bookplate and the neck extends up towards the top right-hand corner. At the top of the cello sits a butterfly, less elaborate than the others, that has been coloured in with blue ink. To the right of the cello is a tall object extending up along the bookshelf. A section of papers, potentially sheet music, in a folder in the bottom right corner. In the bottom left corner, the bookplate creator's initials are printed in capitalized, black, serif font surrounded by a thin black border.

NotesPaul Hahn was born in Reutlingen, Germany on May 11, 1875. He was one of 17 children. Hahn married Grace Delamere in 1929. During their honeymoon in Europe they met up with the Steinway family in Hambourg, Germany. The couple had two children, Maria Grace (born in 1930) and Paul Jr. (born in 1932). Hahn was a cellist and businessman who came to Canada in 1888, settling in Toronto. He learned the cello from Rudolph Ruth in Toronto and Alwin Schroeder in Boston. In the 1890s, Hahn joined the College Trio with J. Lewis Browne and Heinrich Klingenfeld. He was part of the Klingenfeld String Quartette between 1901 and 1903 and then the Hambourg Trio from around 1910 to 1912. Hahn also played with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He toured Ontario and New York State. Hahn taught at the Toronto College of Music. Before opening his own business, Han worked for A. & S. Nordheimer Co. between 1892 and 1913. He opened Paul Hahn Pianos in Toronto in 1913 on 717 Yonge Street, which sold sheet music and pianos. The company also restored pianos. Hahn retired in 1955 and the company was managed by his son, Paul Hahn Jr., under the name Paul Hahn & Co. Hahn Sr. remained the company chairman throughout his life. Paul Hahn was a member of the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto, where he conducted the first orchestral concert (Haydn's Kinder Symphonie) in 1911. Additionally, he was a member of The Royal Canadian Yacht Club. His other hobbies included stamp collecting and a passion for birds ; he became an expert on extinct and vanishing birds. He donated 68 passenger pigeon specimens and his stamp collection to the Royal Ontario Museum, where he was a Patron. Hahn died in Balsam Lake, Ontario on July 20, 1962.
