| Description | This heraldic bookplate is elaborately engraved in Chippendale style. The escutcheon is counterchanged per fess, its primary quarterings (at top left and bottom right) consisting of a barry of six, argent (silver) and azure (blue). The quarter at mid-top is vert (green), divided per chevron, or (gold). The quarter is also charged with three stags statant, two over one. The top left quarter is argent (silver), with a saltier, azure. The quarter is also charged with a roundlet, argent. The bottom left quarter is a gyrony of eight pieces, or and sable (gold). The quarter at mid-bottom is argent, divided per fess, gules (red) with a fillet in the lower part, azure. The quarter is also charged with three rings, gules on both the upper and lower parts. The Chippendale escutcheon is surrounded by two detailed dragons, the dexter supporter with its tailed nowed. Above the escutcheon is a coronet of earl status, and below the shield with Latin motto within. The owner's name is surrounded with elaborate borderwork, in the same style of wreath surrounding the shield. |

| Notes | Most likely belongs to Thomas Philip Earl de Gray (b. 1781-1859). Born at Whitehall on December 8th, 1781 and died November 14th, 1859. He was the elder son of Thomas Robinson, second Lord Grantham, and Lady Mary Jemima York, daughter of the second Earl of Hardwicke and Jemima Marchioness Grey, and the granddaughter of the last Duke of Kent in the de Grey family. At the age of four, Thomas Philip succeeded his father and gained the barony of Grantham in 1786 and after his aunt's death, Countess de Grey, in 1833, gained the earldom to the title the Second Earl de Grey. He was educated at Cambridge, St. John's College, and married Henrietta Frances Cole on July 20th, 1805. The earl was an active politician until his retirement in 1844. Prior to his retirement, he held the position of First Lord of the Admiralty from 1834-5, and also became a Privy Councillor. He was appointed Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland in 1841. He was also "Custos Rotulorum" of Bedfordshire, an aide-de-camp to the Queen, and was nominated for a Knight of the Garter the year of his retirement. The Earl was also a decorated military man, Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant of the Yorkshire Hussar Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry. The Earl had scholarly leanings as well, and became president of the Institute of British Architects along with being a fellow in the Royal Society and Society of Antiquaries. After his death, the barony of Lucas of Crudwell, passed to his daughter, and the earldom of De Grey and barony of Grantham passed to his nephew, the son of his half brother, the Earl of Ripon (See bookplate BP MUR ENG P G7497).
