Description | This bookplate features a wind-blown tree set upon a waving banner containing the originator's motto. It is surrounded with flora, which contains Scottish thistles, maple leaves, a fleur de lis, the number 59, two portraits of men, and the artist's initials. At the top of the design are three escutcheons, all argent (silver) and charged with various elements. |

Notes | William Lawson Grant, born in 1872 and died in 1935, was the son of Jessie Lawson and George Monro Grant, a principal at Queen's University. William both attended and taught history at Queen's and eventually became a successful principal of Upper Canada College. "Stand fast, Craigellachie" was the motto of the Grant clan in Scotland. J.E.H. (James Edward Hervey) MacDonald was born in Durham, England on May 12, 1873 and he died in Toronto, Ontario on November 26, 1932. After his family immigrated to Hamilton, Ontario in 1887, MacDonald became an apprentice with the Toronto Lithography Company and eventually worked for Grip Printing and Publishing Co. MacDonald studied at the Hamilton School of Art and the Ontario College of Art and Design, where he eventually taught and became the principal in 1929. MacDonald was extremely active in the Canadian art community and was a founding member of the Group of Seven. MacDonald produced a large number of paintings and other art work but only approximately twenty bookplates. |
