NotesThe L'Oeuvre des Bons Livres de Montreal was one of the earliest collections of Francophone books in Montreal. Modeled after the original French L'Oeuvre des Bons Livres des Bordeaux, the lending library was started in 1844 by the priests of the French order of Saint Sulpice. The J.M.J. stands for Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

Evitez de salir les livres ; n'ecrivez rien dessus ; ne pliez ni ne perdez pas les feuillets ; ne froissez pas le couvert ; ne les laissez pas trainer dans la maison ; rapportez-les bien enve- loppes. Si vous les perdez ou en- dommagez, payez-en la valeur. II. Vous ne pouvez avoir qu'un livre a la fois ; si vous en voulez deux payez deux abonnements. N'emportez jamais de livres sans les faire inscrire au regis- tre du bibliothecaire. III. Si vous les gardez plus de 30 jours, vous payerez une amende de 3 sous, pour chaque semaine que vous lais- serez passer sans les rapporter. IV. Faites attention aux heures d'admis- sion. Et chaque annee au 1er d'Aout, rapportez tous les livres, afin qu'on puisse les reparer, et remettre la biblio- theque en bone ordre ; vous cesserez alors d'en prendre pendant 15 jours.
TranslationJ.M.J. Montreal Work of the Good Books I. Do not dirty the books ; do not write on ; do not bed or tear out pages ; do not crush the cover ; do not leave lying around ; return them well wrapped. You will pay for damaged or lost books. II. You can only have one book at a time, if you want two, pay for two subscriptions. Never take a book without registering it with the librarian. III. If you keep a book longer than 30 days, you pay a fine of 3 sous for each week it is not returned. IV. Pay attention to the hours of admission. Each year on the first of August, return books so they can be repaired and restored to good order ; we will cease lending books during that time for 15 days.
