Notes | William Greig was a publisher based at Rue Saint Paul, Montreal, QC. Grieg published Newton Bosworth's (d. 1848) Hochelaga Depicta: The Early History and Present State of the City and Island of Montreal, copyrighted Feb. 15, 1839. The monk depicted on the bookplate is of the Franciscan or Dominican monastic order, based on the tonsured hairstyle and style of the belted robe. It is possibly St. Jerome, who is traditionally depicted writing in his study.
