NotesThe bookplate features the crest associated with the Earl of Effingham. The Earldom of Effingham has passed down through the house of Howard after Lord William Harold, who worked under Henry VIII and Edward VI, became Baron Howard of Effingham on March 11, 1554. Sir Bernard Burke's A Genealogical and Heraldic Diction of the Peerage and Baronetage identifies Henry Howard as the current Earl of Effingham in 1878. Henry Howard was born in Surrey on August 23, 1806 and married Eliza Drummond on August 18, 1832.
