Notes | George Grote was born on November 17, 1794 in Clay Hill, England, and died June 18, 1871 in London. He was a historian best known for his twelve volume work, 'History of Greece, ' written between 1846 and 1856. Originally a banker at his father's bank with no university education, Grote was greatly involved in politics and public life, serving as a member of Parliament and as a Vice-Chancellor of the University of London.
