Notes | The George Bishop Engraving and Printing Co. was formed in 1887 by managing director George Bishop. George Bishop's previous business, started in November 1867, began by providing general engraving and embellishment of note paper for private use, engraved invitations, and card work, but branched into services for banks, commercial houses, and corporations throughout Canada. By 1893, the George Bishop Engraving and Printing Co. had risen to become one of the most complete lithographing and printing houses in the country, having upwards of one hundred and twenty-five employees on the payroll, with premises comprising 25, 000 feet, extending from St. James Street to Craig Street, connected by a bridge over Fortification Lane. According to 'A Chronology of Montreal and of Canada: From A.D. 1752 to A.D. 1893", the company provided 'Engraving and Lithographing, for all purposes ; Book, Job & Law Printing ; Lithography, by photo processes ; Engraving, by photo processes ; Book-binding, generally ; Relief-stamping ; Paper-ruling and Electrotyping. General, commercial and fancy stationery, in stock.' The George Bishop Engraving and Printing Co. provided engravings for a number of books and created well-known maps and prints, including 'Bishop's North-West war map' and 'Birds eye view of the city of Montreal, 1889.' It is unknown when the company ceased operations. References: 1) Bishop, G., George Bishop Engraving & Printing Co. (1889). Birds eye view city of Montreal 1889.
