NotesBourget College was founded by three Clerics of St. Viator in 1850 at the instruction of Bishop Ignace Bourget, Bishop of Montreal, for whom the school is named. The school offered several courses of study: a French and English preparatory course, a course of classical studies in French, a 'Complete Commercial Course' in English, and a 'Commercial Diploma' in English of the most essential commercial courses for those students with the funds for only a few months of study. These English-only programs were added in 1884, the same year that the school became associated with Laval University. The bookplate likely was presented to William Brophy born in 1870 in Argenteuil, QC, to John and Mary Brophy. He had two older brothers and two younger sisters. The 1890-91 prospectus for Bourget College lists William Brophy of Carillion, P.Q. as graduating in 1888 with a Commercial diploma. Rev. C. E. Durocher, a member of the Clerics of St. Viator, held many roles at Bourget College, including: Prefect of Studies, Professor of Banking, Commerce, Commercial Law and Stenography for the English Commercial Course, Moderator of the Bourget College Banking Society, and Director of the St. Patrick's Literary Society. A version of this ex libris in French is also available in the Philippe Masson Ex Libris Collection at McGill University.
