Notes | Cercle Cremazie was a literary society started in late 1927 by a group of friends who were all students at Saint Mary College. They chose to name the group after Octave Crémazie, a Québecois poet and bookseller of the mid-nineteenth century, as he was 'one of them.' The group met about once a month for discussions and lectures by members or guest writers. The major figures in Cercle Cremazie wer Andre Laurendeau, Pierre Dansereau, Claude Robillard, Lucien L'Alleir, Gerard Dagenais, Lucien Parizeau, and Hector de Saint-Denys Gameau. The group ended in 1931 as many of the members shifted to a more militant viewpoint, becoming the group 'Jeune-Canada.' The name on this bookplate is somewhat uncertain. It likely says either 'Alph' (short for Alphonse) or 'Geph' (short for Géphet) ' both names appear in the Montreal directory at the appropriate time. A copy of this ex libris is also available in the Philippe Masson Ex Libris Collection at McGill University. The Masson bookplate is also donated by Alph Leclaire and is No. 342.
