NotesDunbar Browne (1835 ' 191?) was the son of Canadian architect George Browne. Dunbar himself studied at McGill, where he earned a BA in 1856 and a BCL (Civil Law) in 1857. He passed the bar and entered into a sequence of law partnerships. In 1859, Browne married Maria Litchfield of Kingston, QC, and they had six or seven children, including Dunbar Browne Jr., the oldest, born 1861. Also in 1861, Dunbar senior earned an MA, and in 1871 a Doctorate of Civil Law. In 1874, Browne was appointed to the office of Collector of Inland Revenue for the Division of Montreal. In 1879, Dunbar Browne, sen., was convicted of embezzling public funds for his own use and sentenced to five years imprisonment. He appears to have been released in 1883, when he again appears in the Montreal directory, advertising as a lawyer. He worked as a lawyer and as editor for a variety of magazines for the rest of his life. The dating of this bookplate has been based on the similarity to BP MUR CAN P B769641, which belonged to Browne's son, Dunbar Jr., and bears a stamp for the Montreal Jail. The similarity suggests they were created at the same time, and that the son lent a book to his father in jail, as no suggestion has been found that Dunbar Jr. was ever imprisoned. A copy of this ex libris is also available in the Philippe Masson Ex Libris Collection at McGill University.
