| Description | Black ink on yellow paper. The scene is framed by an architectural arch with a column on each side, decorated with stylized vines and leaves. At the top left- and right-hand corners, initials are separated by a banner in the centre. The background features a mountain with a silhouette of a tree (possibly a laurel) on the left-hand side. The foreground depicts an ancient Greek amphora (vase with handles) with a frieze of figures and decorative patterns. To the left is an open book with a scroll above it identifying the artist and date of the bookplate. To the right of the vase is a globe showing a stylized representation of North and South America. Other closed books surround these objects. |

| Notes | A. Scott Carter (Alexander Scott Carter) was one of Canada's pre-eminent heraldic artists (1881- 1968). He was born in Middlesex, England, studied as an architect at the Polytechnic in London, and moved to Toronto in 1912. Carter became a member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and specialized in architectural decoration, heraldic ornament, and illumination, for which he became well known throughout Canada, the US, and England. Many examples of Carter's heraldic architectural works can be found throughout Toronto. He is known to have created at least half a dozen Ex Libris bookplates. Other bookplates with positive attribution to Carter include: "Alfred T. De Lury, Professor of Mathematics, University of Toronto, " "H. C. Griffith, Headmaster Ridlev, " "R. A. Laidlaw, of Toronto" (1915), "Vincent Massey, Member of the Firm Massey Harris and Co. Toronto" (1918), and "Henry Sproatt, Architect, Toronto." No information is available on Ruth Goodell or the bookplate created in her name.
