| Notes | Paul Gouin was born in the parish of Saint-Jacques in Montreal on May 20, 1898 to Lomer Gouin and Éliza Mercier. He married Gabrielle Garneau on October 12, 1922 in the parish of Saint-Eusebe. Gouin studied at Jardin de l'enfance in Montreal, Séminaire de Québec, Université Laval in Québec City, and the Université de Montreal. He was admitted to the Bar in Quebec on August 30, 1920. He worked for the law firm Beaulieu and Gouin, and then Cormier, Gouin, and Demers. Gouin was the President and Managing Director of the publishing house Louise carrer et cie ltée. He also served as lieutenant of a regiment of tanks in England during World War One. Paul Gouin was politically active. He was a founder of the Action libérale nationale, founded on June 6, 1934. In 1935, he was elected deputy of the Action libérale nationale. Gouin temporarily aligned himself with Maurice Duplessis and the Conservatives, but withdrew his support from Duplessis on June 18, 1936. Gouin was the co-founder and director of La Province from 1935 to 1938. He chaired the Action libérale nationale on July 24, 1938. In 1939, Gouin ran for office under the Action libérale nationale in Montreal-Mercier, but was unsuccessful. He was a co-founder of the Popular Bloc in 1942. He ran as an Independent national candidate in L'Assomption in 1944 and lost. In 1946, Gouin became the owner of the Beaumanoir craft store in Montreal. He received an honourary doctorate in letters from the Université Laval in 1951. He was an Officer of the Academic Order of Honour and received the merit of the Société du bon parle français in 1953. Gouin was a member of the Conseil de la vie française en Amérique from 1951 to 1975 and President from 1955 to 1961. He served as technical advisor on cultural matters to the Executive Council of Quebec. Gouin was President of the Montréal Festival and the Société des festivals de Montréal in 1952. He served as chairman of the Historic Monuments Commission of the Province of Quebec between 1955 and 1968. He was a member of the University Club and the Reform Club. Gouin co-founded the magazine Vie des arts and had several notable publications, including Médailles anciennes (1927), Servir (1938), Manifeste de l'Action libérale nationale (1936), and Que devons-nous attendre du Bloc ? (1943). Gouin died in Montreal on December 4, 1976. He was buried in the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery in Montreal on December 8, 1976.
